Faculty and Staff

The faculty and staff involved in the Maritime Studies program bring together their varied expertise to provide exciting and innovative approaches to teaching students about our maritime focus. The team includes:

Stephen P. Jones   Professor of English
Professor Jones has taught in the English Department for over 25 years. He has developed and taught two Maritime literature courses at the Avery Point campus and has published extensively on literary topics in Maritime Studies.

C. Paul Hallwood    Professor of Economics
Professor Hallwood has taught economics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at both the Avery Point and Storrs campuses. He has developed and obtained Economics Department approval for ECON 233, Economics of the Oceans, a core course for Maritime Studies.

Helen Rozwadowski   Assistant Professor of History
Maritime historian and Coordinator of Maritime Studies. Dr. Rozwadowski earned her Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and teaches History of Science and Environmental History, as well as Maritime Studies.

Richard B. Cole   Assistant Professor in Residence of Political Sciences
Dr. Cole earned his Ph.D. at UConn where he teaches at both the Avery Point and Storrs campuses. A graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and a career officer in the Coast Guard, Dr. Cole teaches Public Law courses in Political Science and created the curriculum for Political Science 259, Maritime Law, one of the core courses for Maritime Studies.

Nancy H. Steenburg   Assistant Professor in Residence of History
Dr. Steenburg earned her Ph.D. at UConn where she teaches American, Connecticut, and legal history at the Avery Point campus. She developed the curriculum for both MAST 101 and MAST 2XXW while interim coordinator of Maritime Studies.

Mary K. Bercaw Edwards   Assistant Professor in Residence of English
Dr. Bercaw Edwards earned her Ph.D. at Northwestern University. She is a Melville scholar and teaches Literature of the Sea as part of the teaching staff at the Williams at Mystic program in Maritime Studies and has taught American literature at Wesleyan University and the University of Connecticut.

Glenn Gordinier   Assistant Professor in Residence of History
Dr. Gordinier earned his Ph.D. in History at UConn. He is currently the Robert G. Albion Historian and Co-Director of the Munson Institute at the Mystic Seaport where he has taught Maritime history for over twenty years.
