Waterfront Programs
DESCRIPTION
Waterfront Programs is an initiative designed to provide recreational, instructional, academic, and competitive water oriented programming that complements the marine focus of the Avery Point campus. Our current fleet of small sailboats and sea kayaks are launched from our beach side facility at the north end of campus and used on the waters of the Thames River and Fisher's Island Sound.
CURRENT OFFERINGS
- Sailing Club
- Recreational Use of the sailboats and sea kayaks after check-out.
- EKIN 160: Basic Watercraft Skills
- Introduces students to the skills necessary to operate small watercraft.
- The course includes safe boating, power boat operation, and small boat sailing.
- A one credit course offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.
- EKIN 160: Basic Keelboat Sailing
- Introduces students to the skills necessary to operate a small keelboat.
- The majority of the class time is spent on the water learning by doing.
- A one credit course offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.
- EKIN 298: Intermediate Dinghy Sailing
- The concept of balance is used to improve small sailboat handling while building on the sailing skills introduced in Basic Watercraft Skills.
- A two credit course offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.
- Can be used as a MAST related course.
- EKIN 298: Learn to Sailboat Race
- Introduces students to small sailboat racing while improving boat handling and boat speed.
- A two credit course offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.
- Can be used as a MAST related course.
- INTD 180: FYE - Sailing as a Metaphor for Life
- Introduces first year students to the skills necessary to sail small sailboats while discussing the metaphorical relationship of sailing to life and college transition issues.
- A one credit course offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.

PROGRAM MANAGER
Prescott Littlefield has over 20 years of experience as a sailing instructor and sailing program manager. He has worked at numerous yacht clubs on Long Island Sound and Fisher's Island Sound, at the Mystic Seaport Museum, and coached the Williams School Sailing Team prior to coming to UConn, Avery Point. His boating experience includes rowing, dinghy sailing, keelboat sailing, sail boarding, and power boat operation. He has an undergraduate degree in American and Asian History and a graduate degree in Marine Affairs with a coastal zone management specialization. He is a United States Sailing Association small boat sailing, small boat racing, and powerboat handling certified instructor with a State of Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate and 1st Aid and CPR certifications.
