Campus Governance
Campus Administration
An associate vice chancellor/director (AVC) who oversees the operation of academic programs and the facilities department administers the campus. The AVC coordinates campus and marine science administration with the department head of marine sciences and the marine science center.
The coordinator of the proposed maritime studies degree program reports to the AVC, along with the coordinators of the undergraduate transfer programs. The Dean of the College of Continuing Studies works with the campus AVC in developing continuing education programs at Avery Point. The facilities department director reports directly to the AVC while coordinating major developmental initiatives with the facilities administration at Storrs. The AVC works with a staff leadership team in providing operational and strategic planning direction for all campus programs. The Campus Council provides governance and policy representation to all campus units while reporting to the AVC.
The Campus Undergraduate Sector
Degree and Transfer Programs
The Avery Point campus supports three four-year degree programs. Two are related to the coastal and maritime aspects of the campus' marine mission.
- The coastal studies degree, which emphasizes scientific and social perspectives on coastal policy.
- The maritime studies degree, which emphasizes cultural and historical perspectives on life and work within the nation's coastal areas.
- The bachelor of general studies degree, which enables adult and non-traditional students to develop degrees programs related to their career interests.
The campus also provides access to most University of Connecticut academic majors through its two and three year general education and transitional course program.
The Marine Science Sector
The Marine Science Department and Center
The marine science department includes the academic and basic research programs in marine sciences at the University of Connecticut. The department supports masters and doctoral degrees in marine sciences and an undergraduate degree in coastal studies. The marine science faculty has averaged over 11 million a year in federal and state research grants, one of the highest per capita averages in the University.
The marine science center provides technological support and outreach to he marine science department and marine/maritime community. Technical facilities grants of well over 5 million have been awarded to the marine science center.
Marine Sciences Administration
Department head Ann Bucklin administers both the center and the department. The department head is supported by an associate head and an industrial coordinator as well as by a support staff.
The marine science center and department head works with the campus AVC in coordinating campus-wide affairs. The marine science department and center head reports to the Dr. Ross MacKinnon, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences regarding marine science programmatic and budgetary affairs.
The coordinator of the coastal studies degree program reports to both the head of the marine science department and the campus AVC.
