Classroom expectations

Absence from class: You should plan on attending all of your classes.  Missing class means that you are missing important information and interaction with other learners.  When you miss class, you miss an important, dynamic process that cannot be replicated. If circumstances arise that compel you to miss class, then you are responsible for informing your instructors prior to the absence.  You will not have the opportunity to make up missed work, unless the instructor grants permission due to unusual circumstances compelling the absence.  If you anticipate an extended absence, contact the Director of Student Affairs (Branford House 307, 405-9024) for a discussion of the impact of the absences, and your options for continuing to make progress in your courses.

Academic conduct: You are part of a university community that depends on rules and standards based on honesty and trust.  Anyone who does not engage in academic work honestly and fairly violates the community’s trust.  Accordingly, you should know that the university considers academic misconduct a serious offense with due penalties assigned.  No faculty or staff member will disregard such conduct including any forms of cheating or plagiarism.  For more information, refer to UConn’s “Student Code” available at www.dosa.uconn.edu.

Classroom etiquette:  A university is a place where people come together to engage in intellectual exercise.  You will receive a high quality education if you enter the classroom with an attitude of respect for the learning that occurs there, and consideration for your instructor and fellow students who are also there to engage in learning.  Specifically, arrive on time for class, come prepared to participate, listen carefully to your instructor, and speak up to ask questions about the course material.  PLEASE remember to turn off your cell phones!  If you respect the classroom environment, you will find your instructors very willing to respond to questions and to help you learn.

Final exams: The final exam schedule will be posted on campus and is available in the Registration and Advising Office (Branford House room 119).  If you cannot take a final examination as announced in the schedule, you must make an appointment to see the Director of Student Affairs (Branford House 307, 405-9024) to request permission to reschedule the examination.  The final exam schedule is also online at http://web.uconn.edu/averypoint/avery_point/exams.htm.

Weather:  For information on campus closures due to inclement weather, call Avery Point at (860) 405-9020 or tune into a local television or radio station.

Advising:  All students at Avery Point are assigned to an advisor.  You must meet with your advisor prior to registering for classes.  Your advisor will help you choose your classes, and also will want to talk to you about your academic and career goals.  Students who would like additional assistance with career planning may take advantage of the services provided in the Career Services Office on the Storrs campus.  You can receive assistance with resume writing, attend workshops and career days, access self-assessment tools, participate in on-campus interviews, and learn about internships and co-ops. Academic Center:  The Academic Center is available to the Avery Point community for individual and group study; tutorial assistance; development of reading, writing, math, and computer skills; and other assistance with academic or related subjects.  See http://web.uconn.edu/averypoint/avery_point/APAC.htm for more information.

Academic standards: Probation: A student may be placed on probation due to performance achieved in a regular academic term (Fall or Spring) falling below the University minimum scholastic standard.  Based on the student’s level or semester standing, the minimum semester GPA needed in order to avoid a probationary status is given in the table below.  If the semester GPA falls below the value indicated, or if the cumulative GPA falls below the 2.0 level after completion of the second semester, the student will be placed on probation for the next regular academic term.

Dismissal: A student may be dismissed if he/she has two consecutive regular academic terms in which he/she fails to meet or exceed the probationary standard.  However, a student who achieves a semester GPA of at least a 2.3 will be allowed to continue on probation if he/she was otherwise eligible for dismissal.

Disability services: Students with disabilities should meet with the Director of Student Affairs (Branford House 307, 405-9024) if any classroom or campus accommodations are needed.  All students requesting accommodations must have documentation of their disability on file with the University.  Specific questions regarding documentation, services, or accommodations can be directed to the Director of Student Affairs, or to the Office of Disability Services on the Storrs campus (860-486-2020) www.csd.uconn.edu, or to the Undergraduate Program for Students with Learning Disabilities on the Storrs campus (860-486-0177) www.cped.uconn.edu

Library: You may access material directly through the library’s own collection or through computer databases and other search engines from terminals on the first floor.  A valid UConn ID is required to take material from the library.  Books may be returned 24 hours a day to the drop box in the police station.

Personal problems: If something in your personal life is interfering with your academic performance (illness, transportation problems, family crises, etc.), you should discuss it with the Director of Student Affairs (Branford House 307, 405-9024).  If you would like to talk to someone to help you cope with your difficulties, a personal counselor is available to all Avery Point students.  The Counseling Office is located in ACD 116 (405-9044) and offers both drop-in counseling and scheduled appointments.

Plan of study:  If you want to change your plan of study, you should meet with the Associate Director of Advising and Registration.  Call 405-9019 for an appointment.

 

Registration Issues

Campus Change: Many students will complete the upper division coursework in their major at Storrs.  The campus change guidelines at www.registrar.uconn.edu will help you determine when you should make that change.        An information session is held early each semester to help walk you through this process (watch for e-mail announcements).  If you have extenuating circumstances that you feel require you to change campuses early, speak to the Director of Student Affairs (Branford House 307, 405-9024)

Readmission Requests:  Students who have been taken time away from the University may apply for readmission by submitting a written request to the Student Affairs office.  For more information, call 405-9024.  Deadlines for readmission are August 1st for the Fall semester and December 1st for the Spring semester.

Registration:  Continuing students register on-line in mid-semester for the following semester.  All students are required to meet with an advisor prior to registration (BGS students are encouraged, not required, to see their advisor, unless a “service indicator” has been set).  Contact the Registration and Advising Office (Branford House 119, 405-9017 or 405-9019) if you have difficulty registering.

Split Registration: On occasion, you may not find a course you want on the Avery Point campus.  In that case, you may enroll in the course at one of the other UConn campuses.  The number of credits carried at the Avery Point campus must be equal to or greater than the number of credits carried elsewhere.  BGS and non-degree students should contact the Continuing Studies Office (405-9190), as different requirements apply.

Withdrawals:  Students who need to drop or withdraw from one or two classes should contact the Advising and Registration Office (Branford House 119, 405-9017 or 405-9019).  No student is permitted to drop a course after the ninth week of classes unless the campus Director makes an exception, and exceptions are made only for extenuating circumstances beyond the student’s control.  Students who need to withdraw completely from the University should meet with the Director of Student Affairs (call 405-9024 for an appointment).  BGS and non-degree students should contact the Continuing Studies Office for any withdrawals (405-9190).

 

Student Activities

Clubs & Organizations: You are encouraged to get involved in campus life.  The campus has an active Student Government, and several active student clubs.  Contact the Associate Director for Student Activities (405-9014) to learn about current activities or to start a new activity on campus. 

Student Union: The Student Union contains comfortable furniture, pool table, games, a ping-pong table, a television, and stereo for student recreation and relaxation.

 

Stay Informed

E-mail: All students are given a University e-mail account.  You will receive important information about your university studies through your e-mail account, so make sure that you log on regularly.  You can receive technology training by going to www.techtraining.uconn.edu.  If you have questions about how to set up your account, see the tutors in the Learning Center, or call the UITS help desk at (860) 486-4357.  

Financial Aid:  For resources to assist you in paying for your education, refer to the financial aid website at http://www.financialaid.uconn.edu/cnt-main/home.php. The website includes budgeting tools and information on financing your education.

Identification cards:  You need an ID to check out materials from the library, to use the gym facilities, and to participate in activities on the Storrs campus.  Student ID’s are available from the I.D. Center on the 2nd floor of the Library; please check for posted hours.        

Veterans’ Services: Students who are qualified for tuition waiver/assistance or other services because of their military service should contact the Registration and Advising Office (Branford House 119, 405-9017 or 405-9019) for a referral.
