Avery Point Academic Center Staff

Pamela Bedore
Pamela Bedore: I'm an Assistant Professor of English and the Writing Coordinator for this campus. I teach upper-level courses in popular literature and coordinate tutor training for writing. I tutor writing by appointment and can do assessments for anyone with concerns about their writing, reading, speaking or listening skills. I advise English majors and will be happy to meet with anyone who is considering an English major or minor, or who has questions about technical or business writing.
Jillian Cruz

Jillian Cruz: Hi, my name is Jill Cruz. I tutor writing and business math. Also, I have taken a wide range of other classes so I am always willing and excited to see if I can help with other subjects too. My life outside of school consists of ballroom dancing and horseback riding. Other than that, I love movies (as long as they're not scary), a wide variety of music, and spending time with friends and family.

Mary Heckman

Mary Heckman: I am the Program Assistant in Academic Services, and I manage the Academic Center. I have been around UConn for quite a while between Avery Point and Storrs. Avery Point is a unique campus within a great university!

Susan Lyons Susan Lyons: I direct Academic Services at Avery Point and occasionally teach English. I enjoy writing cheesy campus mysteries and tutoring writing, literature, algebra, and chemistry by appointment. However, if you want to learn about how molecules react in solution, you may have to listen to a story first. ("Say, did you hear the one about the two salts who went to a water-party and decided to break up?")
Deborah Macintosh

Deborah Macintosh: My name is Deb Macintosh and I recently graduated with a dual degree in English and American Studies and a minor in History here at Avery Point. I am married and have two great teenaged children, two adorable dogs, and three cats of questionable normalcy. I used to be quite a serious beach 2-man volleyball player and was an awesome 3rd baseman in my teens and twenties, but age, gravity, and pasta has changed my pursuits to reading and merely watching sports on TV (M Go BLUE!).
I tutor sociology, women’s studies, history, lower level Math (101Q-105Q), Spanish, American studies, and my specialty is English...Literature and Writing. If you have a paper due (even for a different field) and are struggling, would just like to discuss ideas, or have a question about essay form or grammar rules, please stop in the Academic Center-I'll be glad to meet and work with you.

Cory Mastrandrea

Cory Mastrandrea: I am a senior, an english major, and a TA for the english 110s class. I tutor writing mainly, but I can also tutor Math 102 and lead study sessions in lower level psychology, history, and sociology courses. I'm almost 21, and I listen to a lot of music and have long hair, does that make me a hippie? For fun, I hang out in the learning center and have fun with the other people who work there and/or hang out in there. Outside of that I do normal stuff: watch movies, play games, hang out with friends.

Mark Newall Mark Newall: I am the instructional technology support person for the Avery Point campus and teach Math. Although I sometimes appear serious, at other times I can be positively goofy. In fact, I am a member of a Morris dancing group called the Not For Joes, and we are anything but serious. The groups' motto is "Walk tall and carry a big stick," and you'll have see us dance to understand exactly what this means.
Dayne Rugh Dayne Rugh:Hello everyone! I'm Dayne Rugh and currently a Freshman and first year tutor here at Avery Point. My major is American Studies and I currently tutor American Studies, History, and English W courses. I have a great passion for the humanities so you can bet that I'll share that passion with you! I'm quite committed to making sure that I can assist anyone looking for a little help. Aside from my duties at Avery Point, I'm a lover of music and have been playing the piano for nearly 14 years now; (you'll probably find me in the Branford House playing their Baldwin Grand Piano). I plan to run for office in the future so let's talk about how we want to inherit this country in the years to come! I look forward to working with everyone that comes our way.
Lindsay Storey

Lindsay Storey: I'm an English tutor. I'm majoring in English because I'm a complete bookworm, and just enjoy the classes and the work involved with them. I've also taken basic Psychology, Pre-calculus, and basic Chemistry, so I can try to answer questions from these areas as well.
As far as my personal information goes, I'm an animal lover (We have 4 cats, 4 dogs, 2 parakeets, fish, a guinea pig, and, coming soon supposedly, a ferret). I also have a passion for music; I play 6 instruments and enjoy almost every music genre. Other than that, my life revolves around my family and friends (as well as the occasional video game). So, that's me in a nutshell, come on in and I'd love to help you, or just chat with you. Hope to see you soon!
